Boston Trip

Boston is my favorite city of the U.S. You read that right. I prefer it to New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco and all the other cities I have been to. Why? I can't really pinpoint why. It's not that it is overly exciting. It's not. Some people have told me that they think Boston is actually really boring. But to me, it's just perfect.

I had to spend the first few days of my stay very low-key. I mostly rested and slept to get over the exhaustion of traveling while sick. But at some point I got restless and while I had good company at the house I wanted to venture outside and enjoy the city.

If you know me, then you know that I love public transportation. I always have. I love riding the subway, tram or bus. It's the perfect opportunity for people watching which is something I enjoy doing greatly. Boston's public transportation is great. It gets you wherever you want to go and it is usually on time. So, I happily bought my ticket and was good to go for my stay.

The first whale watching trip I ever went on was in Boston. I love whale watching, and while Boston is not really THE best place to do it (I recommend Vancouver instead!) I couldn't help myself and went on a whale watch trip again with the Boston Harbor Cruise. It was a calm day but the whales must have been elsewhere because we only saw two humpback whales feeding. I was a little disappointed but at least one of the whales put on quite a show so it was worth it overall.

I was lucky and able to attend a Red Sox game at Fenway park as well. I'd been to baseball games before and enjoyed the atmosphere greatly and I did so again that day. I can watch baseball games for hours and never get bored; it's just such a great game. Of course, it's better to bring your own food and drink because a hotdog for 8$ or a hot chocolate for 17$ is just ridiculous. The Red Sox started out very slowly and I was convinced that they were going to lose the game. Halfway through the game, however, they got their act together and finished off the game beating the opponent easily. It was a great game. I have never been to a major soccer game in Germany and I wonder if the atmosphere is comparable to the one at a baseball game.

Massachusetts State House
Of course I also enjoyed a lot of the history that Boston has to offer even though I had seen some of it before during earlier stays. The Paul Revere House and Massachusetts State House are two places I can recommend to anybody; and the State House is even free (just like the "Open Night Observatory" at Boston Universiity on Wednesdays, in case you are into astronomy) and really worth seeing more than once because likely you won't be able to see all the rooms during your first visit as some of them are of course actually used. I got to see the Senate Chamber; the Senate meets every 72 hours and each member has their assigned seat. The chamber itself looks like it is out of an old history movie and I was amazed that it did not seem really “modernized” at all.
