Books and Beyond

“What are you studying?” is a question that I come across often. Once the person knows that I am studying history, the immediate conclusion is: Oh there is going to be many readings. Most of them probably don’t really know how right they are. Good thing that it is snowy and windy outside creating the perfect winter reading atmosphere!

Monday always kicks off with my women in American history class. We explored the similarities and differences of Native American women and European settlers. In doing so we read primary and secondary sources about Pocahontas and explored the differences between the original and legendary Pocahontas. Moreover, we watched “Black robe” and looked at different kinds of pictures featuring different types of clothing and daily activities such as farming.

What I like about my Civil War class is that the course outline allows us to explore the causes of the war, the war itself and the consequences on a local, regional, national and international level. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Ohio’s local history while staying in the area. It ties in very nicely into the knowledge that we gained in our SHP classes and it offers a different angle on German or European history and developments at that time.

We explored the concept of Manifest Destiny, reading Huckleberry Finn and analyzing Charlie Chaplin’s work in my US High and Popular culture class. It is very interesting to learn the different European and American perspectives on certain developments. It is also very fascinating to see the various definitions which Americans created for themselves.

Last but not least, I am very much looking forward to working on the GLC project. My group will create a policy memo for climate change while looking and analyzing the Paris climate conference documents. I can’t wait to go to Chicago for the presentation!
