Sunset over the Hocking River |
I am looking back on a few turbulent
weeks since the semester ended. After my rent contract with the
University Commons expired, I moved to the Interim Housing of Ohio
University. Let's say, that was the American dorm experience I had
never wanted. For four nights, I called the Hoover House on South
Green my home. The dorm was built in the 1970s and seemed not to be
renovated since then. The part of mine that has a paranoid tendency
was a little afraid at first that the dorm would be haunted, after I
heard zillions of Athens' ghost stories. (Which is kind of stupid,
but … ya' know) During the last days in Athens, I treated myself
with some Athens' specialties you have to try if you should ever come
to visit the town. Whit's Frozen Custard with Hot Fudge, O'Betty's
Red Hot Hot-dogs...The best dogs in town! Also, temperatures had risen
to 29° Celsius. Unbelievable, right?! I sat in the glazing sunlight
in the deserted park in front of the library, drank my cooled large
Dr. P, watched Chipmunks chasing each other and enjoyed my
cheesy-fries (go to O'Betty's).
I had to get rid of too much stuff
before I would leave Athens. It is incredible how much clutter
collects in just four months. My heart bled a little when I sold two textbooks, which were originally around 30 bucks (which is not
much for textbooks, but anyway...) and got only $1.50 back. For the
last two days, I planned a photo tour through Athens. I went to the
Ridges, explored its gloomy charm and watched the sun setting in
purple and pink hues over the Hocking River from the Richland bridge.

Hittin' the Road |
I had not had a response for my
internship then and decided to visit a friend in Cincinnati. On
Thursday, May 7th, at six am. I left Athens and was off to
Cincy. We went to the Hofbräuhaus in Newport, Kentucky, which was an
...experience in itself. Let's just phrase it like that. Apparently,
the beer was imported from Germany. I had Leberkäse with
Kartoffelsalat and felt strangely at home again. Drinking and dining
within the incarnated American perception of the perfect Disney-like
Germany.
As of now, I am stranded, just a bit. I
am living in a very neat hostel in Columbus, it is called the
Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel. I have got my internship at the Ohio
History Connection in Columbus, and I am extremely excited to start
working! Today I had an appointment with one of my supervisors, and I
am looking forward to some promising projects this summer.
