'Murica

‘This world is goofy!’ Yesterday’s inauguration of the new American president put me in a very weird and reflective mood. On the one hand, there is no apocalypse happening right now (surprisingly – I know) and somehow I expected the day to be more momentous. But no one really talked about the events in classes; one just saw a few people wearing their ‘Make America Great Again’ caps and some good old flags with the new president’s name on it. It is indeed a very interesting time to be in the United States and the next couple months will be challenging. The culture shock (if you want to call it like that) is real. As always, the issue here is to get some bread-bread, which is not sweet and cannot be formed into random artworks. When worse comes to worse and my career plans do not work out the way I want them to, I promise to devote my life to let Americans know what bread actually is and will open a bakery/bread empire. Further, I constantly excuse myself for not even running into people but just slightly walking into their way. I also need to invest in yoga pants and baggy Ohio University sweatshirt with Bobcats on them! Or I could just wear my lama pyjamas to be part of the really cool kids and increase my street creds. Americans. It is me a riddle! Athens is this small-town charmy and idyllic place in Ohio with Donkey’s as its hipster café and Salaam with delicious Middle Eastern food. They also do brunches on Sundays – the excitement is real. The classes I take this semester foremost fall into the field of political science but I am also taking a feminist theory one, which is probably my favorite one so far. The readings and work outside of classes is a completely new dimension than what German universities expect from you. Be aware of that if you plan on studying in this country. However, I really enjoy new experiences here and would love to find some time to further explore the area around Athens as well as other parts of Ohio. And since Leo is now a car owner and loves every single one of my absolutely brilliant travel ideas, these road trips might be happening and will of course be documented on this blog. I still have to find a place where I can develop my films for my analogue camera but until then I will use these phone pictures of the last couple of weeks with the gang!
