What an early morning in Athens!
The sun is just setting and shines as bright
as possible to at least virtually warm up the Minus 10 Degrees outside on
the way uptown. The day starts with breakfast at Casa Nueva’s and seasonal
baked burritos (Shout Out’s to Professor Stewart!). Casa Nueva really is one of
the places which make out the special spirit of Athens. Both bar and restaurant
was founded some three decades ago by a few recently unemployed restaurant
workers who then decided to form a co-worker owned cooperative. Ever since then,
this place is surrounded by some Appalachian hippie-esque esprit of good
home-made organic food served in a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Out on Court Street headed south one quickly
arrives at Campus. This is another characteristic thing about Athens – there’s
hardly any distance which takes longer than 20 minutes by foot. Shortly before
main campus, the Schoonover Center for Media and Communication Studies is
located behind a modern a glass frontage quite contrasting the red brick wall
buildings and cobble stone streets. WOUB, the Ohio Universities’ radio station,
is situated on one of the upper floors. In 2007, Roger Ailes, a former graduate
of the Athens’ E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and founder of Fox News
America, donated a sizable amount of money to the radio station which
certainly provided it with a lot of possibilities. However, WOUB appears to be
a liberal and progressive young aged media station offering a dynamic education
area.
At the Baker Center, just a few blocks down the
road, the International Students gather for their Orientation Week. Here,
students from Saudi-Arabia, Iran, Ghana, and China – in total from about at
least ten different countries - get to know each other and bring the wide world
to Ohio’s southeastern Heartland.
