During the second week of
the Transatlantic Seminar 2015, the ASL and Ohio student teams were busy
refining their policy memos and prepared for their presentations on Friday.
After consultations with Prof. Garrett on Tuesday, each team came in for an
extended feedback session with the seminar’s teaching staff on Wednesday. The
students presented what they had prepared until that point and got some more
advice and tips on how to proceed from there. In the evening, seminar
participants came together for a final social evening at the Beyerhaus, a
popular student’s hangout in Leipzig.
On Thursday, each student
team got the chance to do a practice round of presentations before going live
on Friday. Last tweaks were made to the slides and the script worked over one
last time.
Transatlantic Seminar 2015
culminated on Friday, May 22, when each student team presented its security
analysis and policy recommendations to their peers, US Consul General Scott
Riedmann, and the seminar’s teaching staff at the University Library Albertina.
Mr. Riedmann was truly impressed by each team’s professionalism and preparation
and highlighted how well they handled the Q & A session.
To wrap up the project,
students and faculty got together for a reception in the Albertina’s
Fürstenzimmer after the presentations were done. Ohio University students
agreed with their project partners from Leipzig that the seminar was a
demanding yet enriching experience. Additionally, participants welcomed that
the timeframe has been enhanced to two weeks instead of one, as in previous
years. This way, noted ASL student Julia Rabe, teams were able to cooperate effectively,
do their research more thoroughly, and establish more solid relationships with
their peers. Dr. Brook Beshah, Academic Advisor at the GLC, said he appreciates
these kinds of exchange because it offers students the opportunity to improve
their intercultural competence, presentation skills and make friends abroad.
